Kate and Jake share such a sweet and timeless romance. They definitely wanted their big day to reflect the simple elegance that their love embodies, and after a few twists and turns, they truly got their dream wedding celebration at the The Omni Shorehouse on Hilton Head Island.
When the Cutest Boy in School Brings You the Best Box of Chocolates
How and when did you and Jake meet?
Brace yourself, this is a long one. In 2002, I moved up to junior high from elementary school. My best friend, Corie Lynch, was one year ahead of me so she had already learned the ropes. She was talking to me one day about who the cutest boy in school, Jake Glasser (sorry for releasing this top secret information Corie.) My locker was beside one of Jake’s best friends. Jake used to stop by to say hello to his friend, Mary Beth, and Corie was right, Jake was definitely the cutest boy in school. But, I was just a very tall, gangly 12-year-old with bangs and braces, so certainly he hadn’t noticed me. Besides, Jake was a 9th grader, in the school that only went to 9th grade; and on top of that he was popular. One night I signed into MSN messenger and had a friend request from firstname.lastname@example.org. Of course I added the person, even though I was taught not to talk to strangers. The person behind the funny email address wrote me and said, “Hey, I don’t know if you know who I am or not, but my name is Jake Glasser and I think you are really cute.”
In the years to follow, we continued our MSN friendships, but dated other people. Finally, on April 23, 2005 Jake asked me on a date. During the date, he asked if I wanted some chap stick. I didn’t pick up on the subtlety and said sure, fully expecting to be handed the chapstick. Jake then put the chapstick on his own lips and kissed me for the first time. I was only 15 and Jake was 17. We continued to date for the next year but since Jake was leaving for college soon, we eventually broke up.
We remained friends through a few years of experiencing college and dating other people. Fast forward to 2012 when Jake and I were both home for summer break. Jake had been contacting me a lot more in the year or so leading up to that summer break, but in my eyes I was over Jake and had moved on. (My friends all knew this wasn’t true in the least bit.) He texted me often trying to get me to hang out, but I always shut him down. On July 24, I was in downtown Lewisburg and texted Jake to see if I wanted to meet me before he left for his rotation in Alaska. He came to meet me at the Irish Pub and when I got ready to leave, he kissed me goodnight. Though I still tried to play it cool, the entire drive home all I thought about was that kiss. Jake extended his time at home to be with me, delaying his departure for Alaska by about a week.
When Jake was finished with his rotation in Alaska, he moved back to Seattle, Washington, where he was in pharmacy school. Through several difficult months of a long distance relationship, with only a couple visits in between, Jake and I stuck together. We have been each other’s home base ever since.
Tell us about the proposal!
On December 9, 2016, Jake told me to come downstairs because he wanted me to open a Christmas present early. There were two gifts under our tiny tree. He told me to open the wrapped one first. It was the heating pad I had asked for, which I was very excited about. Then he said I could open the second. It was a box of chocolates from my favorite chocolate shop. I opened the box and there were 4 chocolates in it. I was equally excited for the chocolates as I was for the heating pad. When I looked up, he was on his knee with an empty box. I looked at him with my mean face and said, “That is NOT funny!” He told me to look at the chocolates again and there was the ring, sitting on a piece of dark chocolate so I would notice it. Only, he didn’t expect that I would be so excited about my favorite chocolates that I wouldn’t notice the diamond ring.
The Most Romantic Beachside Celebration at the Omni Shorehouse
The Omni Shorehouse in the Omni Oceanfront Resort sits on the beach with an indoor space for ceremonies and receptions. Kate and Jake wanted to get married in Hilton Head where Kate grew up, but not on the beach. So the Omni Shorehouse was the perfect wedding venue! They married under a covered pavilion overlooking the ocean. After the ceremony, they took advantage of the prime beach location and took photos of the bridal party on the beach under the beautiful blue sky.
Why did you choose The Omni Hilton Head as your wedding venue?
We had planned everything to have our wedding in Asheville, NC where we live. The church was booked, reception and caterer planned and the tiny details were ironed out. We had our save the dates ready to send out in the mail, but we had a couple of issues come up that caused undue stress. We realized that we were planning the wedding for everyone else and lost sight of what we were looking for in our wedding, so we decided to try something different; something where family and closest friends could share our wedding day with us. My family has been going to Hilton Head every summer since I was born and it is a very special place to me. We found the Omni resort which had the perfect venue for our ideal wedding. We didn’t want to get married on the beach, but we wanted to have the ceremony with the beach in the background, so The Omni Shorehouse was the perfect venue for our wedding.
My vision for the day was to have a simple, yet elegant wedding. I wanted the backdrop of the ocean to be accentuated and not overshadowed. Most importantly, I wanted to share the day with all of our close friends and family!
Did you have a theme in mind when planning the wedding? Describe your vision of the day!
My vision for the day was to have a simple, yet elegant wedding. I wanted the backdrop of the ocean to be accentuated and not overshadowed. Most importantly, I wanted to share the day with all of our close friends and family! I am not very into flowers and decorations, so I honestly kind of left that part up to my mother. She did a wonderful job and did things exactly how I had envisioned them.
It’s the Little Things
Tell us the details about your fab dress, shoes, and accessories.
The dress was a Maggie Sottero and it was from Wedding Inspirations in Asheville, NC. It took me 45 minutes to pick out the dress. Once I put this one on, I didn’t need to try on any more. I wanted sandals with my dress because I am 6 feet tall and have never worn heels in my life. I figured the first time I wore them should not be at my wedding. I ended up ordering jeweled flip flops from mystique.com. The only other accessory I wore was my grandmother’s pearl necklace.
Were there any highlights or fun surprises during your big day?
The day was absolutely perfect! It was awesome from the time I was getting ready with my 3 best friends all the way to going to the bar in The Omni after the reception with all of our closest friends. I never felt nervous; only excited and full of love. A big surprise was when Jake sent a beautiful flower arrangement to the room while I was getting ready. Attached to the flowers was a card that said “To my future wife” along with a letter he had hand written to me about our marriage.

Honeymooon in Paradise After Their Dream Wedding
Jake and Kate chose to honeymoon in paradise Hawaii. They spent their first night in Honolulu to sure up a visit to Pearl Harbor, then flew into Maui, where they stayed the rest of their week at the Westin Resort and Spa Kaanapali. They both said it was the absolute perfect honeymoon for them! I want to thank Kate for the interview and wish a lifetime of sharing chapstick to Mr. and Mrs. Glasser.
